Whats MND like?

by akerman @ Wednesday, 19. Sep, 2007 - 02:11:45 pm

After writing about Rowing without Oars, I wanted to let you know, for those of you who have not come accross MND before what it is like to have this most crulest of diseases.

Imagine if you will that you are so very very frightened of spiders. Then, you are laid on your bed. Then one of those most dreaded of Gods creations, the spider starts to walk over you.

You can't get up off your bed to get away from it, because your legs have been affected by the disease.

You can't move your arms to brush the spider off you, because those to have been affected the disease, and finally,

You can't shout out to your wife, husband or partner to come and get rid of it, because you speech and swallowing have been affected by the disease as well.

* The only thing which MND does not affect, is the mind *

Rowing without Oars

by akerman @ Wednesday, 19. Sep, 2007 - 02:00:29 pm

Last night at our church YEAST meeting, we were all given a slip of paper, with a one line topic which we had to speak about. I'd got "Tell us about your favourite book".

Well for me it was easy, it had to be the Blue Peter Annual, it still brings back memories of Christmas morning as a child, don't worry about the other gifts, I had to find that familiar shape present, unwray and spend the morning reading it.

But, for me the most moving book I have read recently has to be the one which my blog has taken a line from.

Rowing Without Oars was written by Ulla-Carin Lindquist, on her 50th birthday she was diagnosed with an agressive form of MND (Motor Neurone Disease), my father had passed away with MND some 15 years ago, so the story was very relevant to me. Ulla-Carin balanced a high-flying career in television with the obvious demands of bringing up a family of four children.

One of her children, Gustaf says one day to his mother 'Mummy, every second is a Life' his mum replies, 'what did you say', Gustaf repeats what he had just said, his mum says 'where have you heard that?', 'Nowhere', he says, 'I just made it up', he carries on speaking to his mother, 'You have hundreds of thousands of lives left, Mummy'

I'm sorry if you have read this elsewhere on this blog, it's along time since I mentioned it, and thought about time I re-visted the book.

The ISBN for the book is 071956686X, and cost £10.00, the publisher is John Murray, I hope if you decide to buy a copy that you find it as refreshing, beautiful, poignant, and emotional as I did.

Preparation

by akerman @ Saturday, 15. Sep, 2007 - 02:17:47 pm

I do pick the most peculiar places to sit and write my “Patio Door” pieces for the magazine. Today, with the help of a laptop, I find myself at the Rugby Gymnastics Club; our youngest has been coming along for tutoring for a term now and seems to be really enjoying him-self. But, part of the preparation for his hour of fun and hard work starts with warming up exercises, and they seem to go on for a good ten minutes; stretches, running, jumping and then they are sent off into groups to start their rotations.

Warming up seems to be so very important in many things which we do in life, and sometimes perhaps we forget to do our exercises. I suppose this warming up goes by different names such as; Marriage, Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Communion preparation and of course the dreaded revision for exams, and there will be many more which I’m sure I’ve forgotten, and there are of course certain times in life, which we are in no way prepared for, such as the passing of a loved one.

I was recently given my father’s St. Swithun’s prayer book, it was given to him as a Confirmation gift, and it gives us some guidance for preparation for Holy Communion; 1) you ought to receive Holy Communion regularly and after careful preparation. 2) Prepare carefully by repentance and prayer. Do not eat or drink anything, however small after 12 o’clock the night before. 3) Try to have something definite to thank God for, and to also ask him for. Remember the Church of Christ and pray for the living and the departed. 4) Be in Church at least ten minutes before the service begins.

There are certain times of the church calendar which are, in there own way a preparation, times such as Lent and Advent.

The last of these two will soon be upon us, for Advent is itself is a holy season of expectant waiting and preparation. Advent, I’ve learnt, can begin as early as the 27th November, or at the latest 3rd December, so whichever it may be this year we had better start and get ready for the Nativity of Christ.

Dare I!!!!!!!!!!!!!
